Foresight Debate with Scientific American
C&EN takes note of nanotechnology debate
Chemical & Engineering News (circ. 145,000),
a publication of the American
Chemical Society, published a news item discussing the debate
on nanotechnology between Foresight Institute and Scientific
American. Excerpts follow:
Nanotechnologists use web to rebut Scientific American
article
A group of nanotechnologists who don't like the tone and
content of an article on nanotechnology in the April Scientific
American have responded to it in an innovative way. In
addition to the usual approach of submitting a letter to the
editor, they posted a point-by-point rebuttal...and alerted
people about the posting by email...
But in a lengthy rebuttal, posted on the web just after the
issue of Scientific American was published,
Merkle details his view that the article is biased against
nanotechnology and is inaccurate. He points out that the web
makes it possible for such "inaccurate and misleading
information [to be] rapidly squelched."
